What Sustainability Means To Us

A Reflection on Ten Years of Thoughtful Design

“Shjark began with a desire for less. Not minimalism for its own sake, but the idea that a garment should truly earn its place in your wardrobe.

People often ask what sustainability means to me. For me, it has always come down to doing my job well. I can’t control the world’s systems, but I can control how I design, what I make, and the integrity behind every decision.

If I’ve done that well, you’ll keep your Shjark pieces. You’ll return to them. They won’t leave your wardrobe because they still serve you, in quality, in fit, in feeling.

That, to me, is sustainability.”

— Amber Gardner, Founder & Designer

Beyond the Buzzwords

Sustainability can feel like a checklist. Important, but often disconnected from the reality of making clothes well. For Shjark, it has never been a marketing pillar. It is a design practice. A commitment to making garments with intention, not volume. We don’t claim perfection, and we don’t chase trends dressed as ethics. Instead, our approach is grounded in three principles:

Longevity.

If a piece is worn for years, it has already outperformed any fast fix.

Fewer, better.

A considered wardrobe values intention over accumulation.

Integrity.

Decisions are guided by craft, relationships and trust, not shortcuts.

In Practice

Sustainability is not an abstract idea. It is whether a piece is worn. It begins at the sketch, and carries through every decision. Each garment is considered for how it will wear, how it will last, and whether it earns its place.

Shjark has always been built on close collaboration with skilled makers. That proximity allows for considered problem-solving, consistent quality, and accountability at every stage.

Sustainability is often found in these quieter choices.

The Quiet Truth

A sustainable wardrobe isn’t a set of rules. It’s not about perfection. It’s about what you wear. Pieces that remain. Pieces that are returned to. Pieces that still feel right.

That has always been the intention.

Looking Forward

Sustainability is not a destination. It is a commitment, renewed each season. This reflection is not about looking back, but holding onto what matters.

The way something is made.
The reason it exists.
The role it plays in a woman’s life.

Where that thinking leads next is something I’ll take time to consider. The instinct remains the same.

To design with purpose.
To make things that last.
To create pieces that earn their place.
